Reasons why we drove 5.5 hours back to my hometown for the holiday weekend:
- I was dying to see my parents
- I was dying to see my cousin’s new baby boy
- I was DYING to see the Yard of the Month sign in real life
It seems the older I get the more homesick I get. I can’t believe that six years ago I was begging to leave and now I am begging for vacation time to just spend a few days. I am a walking contradiction. One minute, I am dreaming of moving to the other side of the world and the next I am wishing I could just move back home and be a beach bum. I can tell you one thing, I am going to want to go home a lot more now that there is a tiny little man by the name of Aidan who has stolen my heart. At under eight pounds, he already has “aunt” Christine wrapped around his long skinny finger. I kind of went crazy at Target buying him outfit after tiny little ohmygawdsocutemustbuyrightnowsquee outfit. Overall, it was an excellent weekend. Lots of food, family and all around fun. I made my aunt a version of the cake I made earlier that week. Her version came out amazing and was my favorite variation so far. I think the best compliment I was received was both my mom and dad saying it looked like something my Grandma B would make. If I end up being half as amazing as she was, I would consider myself lucky. I think she was pleased with my cake because that night my dad came in from the backyard and said that she had sent me a gardenia from her bush. She planted that gardenia bush in our backyard over 20 years ago and every May it blooms like crazy. It was such a rare blessing to see a single bloom this late and I know that it was a little gift from heaven.
Oh and the yard of the month sign was amazing. My mom even saved the copy of the newspaper so I could see the picture of him getting his plaque. And yes, he is wearing pants.
